Want To Become A Filmmaker

Filmmaking is an art. A good film has the ability to take a viewer on an emotional ride and captivate them.  A really good film might even cause a change in a person whether or not they are aware of it. So how do you get behind the camera and create this magic? It's easy of course.

Let's pretend you know absolutely nothing about filmmaking. Your first step should be to open yourself up to all types of films and watch a ton of them, paying close attention to how scenes are captured and presented. Watching mega blockbusters is fun but you can learn a lot from smaller films that you can actually put into practice.

Next you'll want to volunteer on a few local productions. Put your pride aside for a moment and browse the classifieds for a few small student or indie projects in your area. Reach out to the producers and tell them that you are willing to do anything to help.

Once you are out in your local community networking you will want to expand a little further. There are a few filmmakers social network out there but simply joining isn't going to bring you fame and fortune. You should look to these sites as a place to showcase your work, find inspiration, and open yourself up for critique and criticism.

When you are able to get on set with a local production don't think that you'll end up schmoozing with the director, even if you do chances are the director is a barista at your local Starbucks themselves. What you need to do is be willing to grab lunch for everyone or wrap cables and breakdown the set. Why would you want do all of the grunt work? To put it simply you have a lot to learn and should get to every set with a positive attitude and be ready to learn. Observe what is being done on set and watch the mistakes that are made to learn what you shouldn't do. Volunteer on as many projects as you can for a few months and you will not only get a little bit of production experience but you will also undoubtedly meet a few people along the way that are in your same boat. These relationships can really lead to something so don't take them too lightly. With all the movies you've been watching it should be pretty easy to strike up a conversation during downtime.

Your next step is to get your hands on a camera and shoot anything you can. Reach out on your filmmaker’s network and ask a few friends over who can act out simple scenes, and try your hand at editing them on any simple editing software available. Whether or not you are interested in post-production you should spend some time splicing shots and scenes together to develop a feeling for what works and what doesn't.

So you read this article with the hopes of finding the magic formula to become a filmmaker did you? That doesn't exist. But if you follow these steps you will be on your way, well the truth is if you are already picking up a camera to create stories you are already more than halfway there. Becoming a successful filmmaker is an entirely different story.
